Active substance:
Cefazolin Sodium
Pharmacotherapeutic group:
Antibiotics for systemic use, other beta-lactam antibiotics, cephalosporins of the first generation.
ATC code: J01DB04
Mechanism of action:
The mechanism of action of cefazolin is based on an inhibition of the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall (in the growth phase) by blocking the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs), such as transpeptidases. This results in a bactericidal effect.
Therapeutic indications:
Cefazolin Dr. Eberth is used to treat the following infections caused by pathogens susceptible to cefazolin:
- Skin and soft tissue infections
- Infections of the bones and joints
Perioperative prophylaxis:
During surgery with an increased risk of infections with anaerobic pathogens, e.g. colorectal surgery, a combination with a suitable anti-anaerobic drug is recommended.
The use of Cefazolin Dr. Eberth should be limited to those cases where parenteral treatment is necessary.
The susceptibility of the pathogen should be tested (if possible) before treatment, but therapy can be started before the results are available.
