Active substance:
Ampicillin

Pharmacotherapeutic group:
Antibacterials for systemic use, penicillins with extended spectrum

ATC code: J01CA01

Mechanism of action:
The mechanism of action of ampicillin is based on inhibition of bacterial wall synthesis (in the growth phase) via blockade of the penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) such as the transpeptidases. This results in a bactericidal action.

Therapeutic indications:
Ampicillin Eberth is indicated for the treatment of the following infections in adults, adolescents and children:

  • Acute exacerbation of chronic bronchitis
  • Pyelonephritis
  • Bacterial meningitis
  • Community-acquired pneumonia when penicillin G has not given the desired effect or is unsuitable for other reasons
  • Intra-abdominal infections
  • Bacteraemia that occurs in association with, or is suspected to be associated with, any of the infections listed above

Ampicillin Eberth is also indicated for the treatment and prophylaxis of endocarditis.

Consideration should be given to official guidance on the appropriate use of antibacterial agents.
